Volunteer projects
There is a variety of volunteer projects to which you can contribute: social work, teaching English to migrant children, working with orphans, etc. If your level of Chinese is very high, there are also opportunities to support the projects by e.g. translating. When you enroll for the Volunteer Program you can indicate your interests. Some examples: Social workYou will work in a day care training centre for mentally disabled people. As a volunteer you will assist the local staff in the daily activities of the trainees. The day care training centre is located in the centre of Beijing in a traditional Chinese courtyard house, in a quiet hutong not far from or school location. Teaching English to migrant childrenYou will teach English at a high school especially set up for migrant children. These children from Chinese migrants (who immigrated to Beijing from the countryside in China) have limited education opportunities in Beijing. The children are therefore very eager to learn English from you! Children's home for children of detaineesIn this project you will be supporting a children's home for children of detainees. While their parents are in prison these children are given shelter in this children's home. You can teach them English, do sports together with the children, and show around donors of the children's home who may visit in the weekends. Animal shelterIn the suburbs of Beijing an animal shelter is located with more than 700 dogs and cats. You will support the shelter by helping with the daily care of the animals by brushing and feeding them, as well as giving some extra attention to the dogs and cats. Preditory birds shelterYou can also choose to work in this predatory birds shelter in Beijing. Sick or wounded birds are taken care of here until they are well enought to go back again to the free nature.
The projects above don't offer any free accommodation because their resources are very limited. Accommodation is therefore included in the Volunteer Program. |
